Doom is a sci-fi/horror First Person Shooter series developed by id Software. It was very popular in the 1990 and it was reconized for it's pixelated 3D-graphics, it's multiplayer gameplay and it's WADs. It's WADs let gamers customize a certain stage in Doom with different monsters and make them into pop culture like movies, TV, games, etc (You could probably make Tal a space marine in the WADs
). There were also Doom clones that went along with it.
Overview
Now Doom takes place in Mars. You play a Doomguy (acually a space marine) who works for the UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation) as they experiment with teleportations between different glalaxies. Suddenly, space demons break out of Hell and attack everybody and some often turn into zombies. So it's the space marine's job to send the demons back to Hell where they belong.
Gameplay
The gameplay in the series is simple. It's like your everyday FPS where you get a gun and shoot stuff, Well, in the first Doom, you can see the guy you're playing as on the bar below you. The ammo bar tells you how much ammo you have left, the health bar tells you the limit of your living when you get hit by a monster, and you pretty much know everything else.

Controversy
The Doom series was infamous for conatining graphic R-rated violence and scary demonic imagery. But the big part of the game was the violence.
In March 20, 1999, two adolescent boys, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, committed a very controversial school massacre. They've played so much of that game that they felt like going to Columbine High School and shoot everybody in it. Eric informed Klebold that their murder would be "like f*ckin' Doom
". So they went in. And as they went in, they started shooting up the place and the people living in it (they only killed 12 students and 1 teacher). Then they shot themselves in the head after that. After the killing, A lawsuit was filed by the families of the murdered Columbine victims. They noticed that Klebold and Harris were fanboys of gory video games and music with graphic lyrics. So they all fined the entertainment industry under 500,000 dollars.
